Although there are many legends about the Dragon Boat Festival, it is today celebrated by most Chinese in memory of Qu Yuan. He was a minister in the Chu state and was loved by the people at that time. But one day he became sad because his country was facing troubles. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he jumped into the river because he knew he could no longer save it. Locals rushed into their boats to search for him. They threw rice balls, eggs and other food to keep fish from eating his body. Fearing that the rice balls would be eaten by turtles, people wrapped rice in reed leaves and tied the leaves with coloured silk thread. Thus, zongzi appeared later to remember this great poet. Customs like holding dragon boat races and eating zongzi at home were passed down. Different from other festivals, people never say 'Happy Dragon Boat Festival', but say 'Duanwu Ankang' in Chinese when they greet each other.
